History
Camp Murray has a military history that dates back almost 10 years ahead of its largest sibling, Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Camp Murray was used during the Indian War of 1855 for military training associated with Fort Steilacoom. The location was officially commissioned as a National Guard Base in 1889, pre-dating Fort Lewis by a generation. Years later in 1922, Camp Murray officially became the National Guard state headquarters.
Throughout its history, Guardsmen assigned to the camp have gone through various missions. These included disaster relief efforts, the Mexican Border campaign against Pancho Villa, both World Wars, the Korean War, the Berlin Crisis, the Vietnam War, the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980 and most recently the operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Old Arsenal Museum
Inside Camp Murray is the Old Arsenal Museum, wherein every detail has a story to tell about the Washington National Guard.
To begin with, one will see a collection of military vehicles, including an M-47 tank and an F101 jet fighter. An interesting fact here is that these two vehicles have a distance between them of 134 feet, which actually represents the number of years between the camp’s use by the U.S. military in 1855 and Washington’s Centennial in 1989.
There are also other significant facts in history there. Other distances within that museum serve to commemorate and honor the number of Guardsmen who were mobilized, killed or injured in various operations/campaigns all over the world.
Emergency Operations Center
The Washington Military Department in Bldg 1 in Camp Murray also holds the Emergency Operations Center, the state’s headquarters that handles emergency responses. It serves as an information collection and disaster analysis center and coordinates the responses to ensure that those who need help are provided assistance quickly and effectively.
