Base Type: Army

Fort Benning is a United States Army base in Georgia that sits right near the border of Alabama. It has a population of around 108,000 service members, their families, and civilian workers, making it the fifth-largest U.S. base, going by population. It’s only smaller than Fort Bragg, Fort Campbell, Fort Hood, and Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The post itself is just south of Columbus and off Highway 27, and covers almost 182,000 acres of land — 7% of which is in Alabama. The land between Georgia and Alabama is divided by the Chattahoochee River.

Benning is a major U.S. base that is capable of deploying combat-ready soldiers at any time. It’s home to the U.S. Army’s Maneuver Center of Excellence, Armor School, Infantry School, the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, parts of the 75th Ranger Regiment, the 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade, and many more infantry units. While it’s been known as the “Home of the Infantry” since 1909, after the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) it has transformed into the Maneuver Center of Excellence — meaning, it combines its infantry history and knowledge with various schools and establishments that make Benning that much more efficient.

Named after Confederate Army Brigadier General Henry L. Benning, Fort Benning was founded as “Camp Benning” well over 100 years ago. Shortly after it was built, Benning turned into a training camp for World War I soldiers, and even hosted General Dwight D. Eisenhower with his troops. Fort Benning didn’t become a permanent Army base until 1920, when more than $1 million was authorized by Congress to build up the Army base and an Infantry School of Arms. In today’s money, that’s almost $13 million. In 1927, major changes were made to the post by Lt. Col George C. Marshall. He believed that the mass casualties in World War I were caused partially by insufficient training, so he sought to make Benning a great home base for Army training. Marshall changed the way soldiers were trained and completely remade the education system. These changes became known as the “Benning Revolution,” and later on Marshall became known for his “Marshall Plan” to assist postwar Europe; he also won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Benning was also revolutionary in that it hosted the first Army soldiers to ever parachute jump. In August 1940, two officers and 46 enlisted volunteers performed a test jump over Lawson Field at Fort Benning. It was a success, and grew from there as a new tactical warfare technique and a new specialty for soldiers.

During World War II, Benning hosted almost 100,000 officers and enlisted soldiers, including the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion — which never deployed to war, but did deploy to the Pacific Northwest due to the concern that Japan would set forest fires there with incendiary balloons. The 4th Infantry Division, however, did deploy out of Benning, and remained in Germany for five years. And the Airborne School was permanently erected on the main post, where it remains today to train new parajumpers. In the Vietnam War, Fort Benning instilled a Scout dog school, used to train dogs to detect enemy ambushes and explosive devices. There was also an immersive-training village that was designed to simulate foreign terrain and train soldiers on new systems, weapons, and equipment.

Today, there are four main components of Fort Benning: Main Post, Kelley Hill, Sand Hill, and Harmony Church. The Main Post houses different garrison and units like the 14th Combat Support Hospital, 11th Engineer Battalion, and more. It also holds training schools like the Officer Candidate School, the Airborne School, and the Non-Commissioned Officers Academy. The headquarters is marked by McGinnis-Wickham Hall. There is also a monument: the Ranger Memorial. Kelley Hill houses the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment Task Force (Task Force 1-28), which contains 1,053 soldiers. Sand Hill houses the 198th Infantry Brigade and the 30th AG Reception Battalion. Harmony Church houses the 194th Armor Brigade, the 316th Cavalry Brigade Armor School, and the 4th Ranger Training Battalion. It’s also the location of the Armor School.

There are seven different housing communities on Fort Benning. These include game rooms, fitness centers, playgrounds, and other amenities. Fort Benning has six schools; five of which are elementary schools, and one of which is a middle school. High schoolers have the option of three nearby off-post high schools, including Spencer High School in Muscogee County, Chattahoochee County High School, and Russell County High School. School buses offer free transportation to these locations.

If you’re PCSing to Fort Benning or have a loved one stationed there, be assured: It’s a reputable and historic post that’s unparalleled in its training. There are many resources and support you can find from military families just like you.
