Hiring Our Heroes Comes to JBLM

Hiring Our Heroes is a program launched by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation to help veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses find meaningful employment opportunities.

When Hiring Our Heroes was founded in 2011, the United States was facing a national crisis, with record-high unemployment rates for veterans. Though the rate has fallen to 3.7% today, military spouses are still experiencing recession levels of unemployment. Their rate is 16% — over four times that of their civilian counterparts. They are also prone to high levels of underemployment. These issues are often experienced due to frequent moves and lack of professional network.

To help alleviate this issue, spouses can join the Military Spouse Professional Network. It provides military spouses with a ready-made network of employers and spouses. Hiring Our Heroes is also set to launch a new Military Spouse Economic Empowerment Zone (MSEEZ) in Olympia, Washington. MSEEZs are collaborative efforts among local business, civic, and military communities that establish employment networks in municipalities around the country. They connect military spouses with employers in the local community and a range of employment-related tools and resources.

“It sends a powerful message when the governor recognizes that military spouse employment issues require solutions-based programming across the state,” says Elizabeth O’Brien, Senior Director of the Military Spouse Program. “We look forward to launching additional MSEEZs across the state in targeted locations to serve military spouses, creating talent-ready pipelines between spouses and employers.”  

Hiring Our Heroes will be hosting two events on Joint Base Lewis-McChord this month — and the first is for military spouses! It will be held at 9:00am to 2:00 PM on September 24th at the American Lake Conference Center, 8085 N Beach Rd Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA 98433. Spouses will learn how to seek and grow their desired careers. It offers firsthand experiences from career-minded spouses and advice on entering or returning to the workforce. The second event is a two-day Transition Summit, held from September 25th-26th at the American Lake Conference Center. It will include a series of town hall-style panel discussions, networking receptions, employment workshops, and a hiring fair. These summits provide direct access to service members who are 90-120 days away from transitioning to a civilian career. To find out more, visit:
